SCDB Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
How do I perform backup's and restore's using my CD-RW drive?
How do
I include images in SCDB for Windows Program?
The users manual mentions a CD-ROM.
Can I purchase SCDB for Windows on CD-ROM?
Correcting "Run Time Error –2147483640 (80000008) OLE Automation"
How do I catalog my sheets of stamps?
What are the dashes after the stamp
numbers for?
Since you have a CD-RW, bypass the backup in SCDB for Windows. You
will need to copy all files from the C:\STAMP folder that end in .DBF and
.DBT. For example, you can use your CD-RW software to copy
C:\STAMP\USA.DBF and C:\STAMP\USA.DBF to your CD-RW drive. When you need
to restore, simply copy the files back the the C:\STAMP folder.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When you copy the files
BACK to C:\STAMP, most likely, they will be marked as
READ-ONLY (because that's how they appear on
a CD-ROM). You WILL need to set them back to
READ-WRITE.
See your CDRW software documentation for more on the copy aspect.
Look into the Windows help under FILE ATTRIBUTES for help on setting files
to READ-WRITE.
You can add images to your SCDB program three ways:
1. Purchase the CD-ROM with over 3000+ large, full color images of
US stamps. (Over 126 Mb of graphics files)
2. Scan images using a scanner and graphics software.
3. Obtain some US images for FREE from the USPS Internet Site at
www.usps.gov, or visit our
Links page.
If you create your own images, or get them from the Internet, you need
to provide the proper names for the images. SCDB for Windows uses a simple
directory (folder) structure to store images based on the Scott Number.
Your SCDB for Windows program is typically stored on your "C:" drive in a
directory (folder) called STAMP. [C:\STAMP]. In the STAMP directory
(folder) is a directory for USA pictures called USA [C:\STAMP\USA]. In the
USA directory, there are a number of other directories for groups of
images. You will see (or create) 0000, 1000, 2000, 3000, C, CE, UX, R, RW.
The proper directory structure should look like this:
Scott Number 0-999 goes into \STAMP\USA\0000
Scott Number 1000-1999 goes into \STAMP\USA\1000
Scott Number 2000-2999 goes into \STAMP\USA\2000
Scott Number 3000-3999 goes into \STAMP\USA\3000
Scott Numbers starting with "C" or other prefixes go into their
respective directories.
Supported Image Types:
SCDB for Windows version 1.x: .GIF
SCDB for Windows version 2.x .GIF & .JPG

Back in the
40's I used to collect sheets of 100. Where do I list them on your
package?
You would need to 'create' a new number for these stamps
and make it a variety of the stamp is question. For example, If you have a
sheet of Scott #2000, you would
- Get Scott #2000 on the screen in the Add/Make Changes screen
- Press the duplicate stamp button
- Give the new record a number like 2000 MS (MS for mint sheet)
- Once added, press the Header Changes OK button to change the
description to indicate this is a sheet
- Record your inventory in the Mint Single category.
[Note: you can use any suffix on the
number you like (MS, FS). You can also use the MS/FS as a prefix. Keep in
mind two things.
First, BE CONSISTENT. Chose one method
and stick to it.
Second, the placement of the MS/FS in the
prefix vs. the suffix will affect how these new numbers appear when the
file is sorted.
If you use a prefix, then all numbers
with a MS prefix will be together. If you use a suffix, then you will see
#2000, 2000a, 2000MS, 2001, 2002, etc.]

You have
a US stamp of 2451-1 and 2451-2, etc. You also have dash numbers on
2452 and perhaps others. In looking through the Scott catalogue and the
Postal Services Guide to US stamps, I can't find the dash numbers. The
descriptions you provide offer no clue that I can figure out. What's the
story?
These are plate numbers for PNC strips.
